    About Miami
    City Profile
The jewel of Florida's "Gold Coast", Miami, is one of the great cities of America. Incorporated in 1896, but discovered by the Spanish in the 16th century, who estimated the village of Mayaimi was up to 2,000 years old. It was inhabited by Tequesta Indians. The Florida East Coast Rairide arrived in Miami, in it's year of incorporation, opening up the city, and the coast, to a boom in domestic tourism. This was followed by the Florida land boom, which spanned the 1920s, through to the stock market crash in 1929. The city's population trebled during this period. Miami was ravaged by hurricanes in 1926, and 1935. During the second world war, the US Army took over the beachfront hotels to house army troops.

    Tourism
From its beginning just over 100 years ago, Miami billed itself as a travel destination: Its first motto was "America's sun porch." Warm weather, sandy beaches and bright sunshine were its selling points then, and they remain a potent draw today. But America's sun porch has allure far beyond the U.S. People from all over the Caribbean and Latin America have settled there in the past 40 years, giving the city a new nickname, "the capital of the Western Hemisphere." As much as we love Miami's warm-weather fun, it's the city's lively, international character that sets it apart from many other travel destinations.
